  •       The stereo version of Bal Masque advertises four other stereo issues by Ellington on its back cover, including a stereo version of Such Sweet Thunder (CS 8091) which was never released on LP. Other Ellington LPs advertised on jacket of CS 8098: CS 8072; CS 8015; CS 8053; CS 8091.
  • ††       Other Ellington LPs advertised on jacket of CL 1282: CL 1245; CL 1152; CL 1095; CL 1033.
  • †††      The cover of CS 8098, and possibly also CL 1282, exists in different versions with alternate titles on its front cover. The original version is titled "DUKE ELLINGTON his piano and his orchestra at the BAL MASQUE. This was subsequently changed to DANCE TO DUKE! HIS PIANO AND ORCHESTRA AT THE BAL MASQUE. All copy on the back jacket and label stayed the same.
  • §      An "office communication" memo dated March 1, 1963 regarding "Midnight in Paris (CL 1907)" directed: "On the next run of album covers, please change the title of the album Midnight In Paris to Paris At Midnight. This supersedes the change of title suggested in Clive Davis' memo of January 7. Existing inventory may be used." I've never found a copy, mono or stereo, with the latter title.
  • Mike Callahan's "Columbia Label Overview" explains the company's long playing record history and numbering system.
  • Note: Most release dates shown here derive from Columbia's "Artist Card[s]" for Duke Ellington. A set of photocopies of the cards for the years 1927-61 was made in 1961 by an employee of Columbia Records, who generously allowed me to make an additional copy for myself. Note that release dates shown on the cards and those shown by Mike Callahan on his "Columbia Label Overview" website do not always agree exactly. Copies of "Artist Card[s]" for the years after 1961 aren't held here. Release dates for 1962-63 were taken from Callahan's website. The release years 1973, 1979 and 1982 were printed on the jackets of their Columbia albums.
  • DEMS 99/1 p.10 reproduces a Columbia Records Album Cover Copy and Mastering order form dated 1970 02 26 for a 12-inch pop album titled "Command Performance" (Columbia CS 1002, "May In Stores"), which was to have coupled THE QUEEN SUITE with THE PERFUME SUITE. Approved by Townsend and Macero, "selections cleared and in sequence." The Queen's Suite, never issued during Ellington's lifetime, was finally released in 1976 on Pablo.
